'50s-'60s ROCK'N'ROLL

JOHNNY CASH
"Johnny Cash with His Hot and Blue Guitar"
GET 7503-1 LP $12.55
The first long-playing album by a Sun Records artist, this classic hit the stores in November 1957. Featured are "Cry Cry Cry" (his debut single for Sun that entered the country charts at #14), "Folsom Prison Blues" (the second single that reached the country Top 5 in early 1956) and its follow-up, the original "I Walk the Line" (country chart #1 for six weeks, crossing over into the pop Top 20), plus several other classic tunes. Original artwork, 180 gram vinyl, Italian import. (GET BACK)

'60s ROCK

MC5
"Human Being Lawnmower"
NER 3032-1 LP $8.55
NER 3032-2 CD $11.00
The baddest and maddest of all the MC5 tracks on the Total Energy label, plus recently unearthed studio and live material unavailable elsewhere, compiled by John Sinclair and Wayne Kramer! Packaging includes previously unpublished photos, complete with liner notes. (TOTAL ENERGY)

MC5
"Ice Pick Slim"
ALIVE 0008-1 10" $8.25
Two extended live tracks recorded at Detroit's legendary Grande Ballroom in 1968, only released on 10" in 1995 and long out of print. The title track is the only available version of this song, inspired by the notorious convict/ghetto poet Iceberg Slim, writer of "Pimp" among others. Side two is improvised blues, lifted from John Lee Hooker's "I'm Bad Like Jesse James," and features John Sinclair's primitive sax work. (ALIVE)

VAN MORRISON
"The Contract-Breaking Sessions"
DEC 27-2 CD $10.70
Another in the "Celebrities at Their Worst" series, this is VAN MORRISON trying to get out of his contract with Bang Records. He owed them one more album, so he sat down with his acoustic guitar and began strumming it to whatever nonsense words happened to cross his mind, sometimes ridiculing Bang or an unfortunate label exec named George. Mind-numbing. (MAD DEADLY WORLDWIDE COMMUNIST GANGSTER COMPUTER GOD)

'70s PROTO-PUNK

DEBRIS'
"Static Disposal"
ANOPHELES 06-1 LP $13.75
A limited vinyl re-issue of this very rare 1976 Oklahoma garage proto punk album, remastered from the original tapes, with one previously unreleased bonus track! Think early MX-80 SOUND, very early PERE UBU, or very early CHROME, with influences from THE STOOGES, CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, and ROXY MUSIC. Original artwork on high quality jackets, new insert, 1000 on clear vinyl. (ANOPHELES)

ACOUSTIC

KAIA
"Oregon"
MRLR 26-2 CD $10.50
Mr. Lady Records/BUTCHIES owner/member Kaia has whipped up a new collection of mostly-acoustic songs, her first in 4 years. Blend abstract with urgent, angst filled lyrics, tender melodies, lullaby like songs, a splash of '80s keyboards, a touch of piano, harmonica, percussion by Melissa York, and guest vocals by Amy Ray, and you have a fine 3rd solo album. (MR. LADY)

ALTERNATIVE, INDIE ROCK, POP

ALOHA
"Sugar"
PRC 051-1 LP $8.85
PRC 051-2 CD $10.20
Take post-rock like TORTOISE and TRANS AM, and then inject it with the melody stylings of BRAID and THE PROMISE RING. This Cleveland, Ohio band is known for its looping guitars and vibraphones over dynamic rhythm tracks, and adding instruments like the triangle and congas into the mix, fleshing out the sound with prog rock and Coltrane-like stylings. (POLYVINYL)

BEARDS, THE
"Funtown"
SFTRI 665-2 CD $10.80
This is the first superGIRLgroup of the 21st century, consisting of Lisa Marr and Sherri Solinger of BUCK and LMX, and Kim Shattuck of THE MUFFS. Eleven pop songs coated with pixie dust and a whole lotta love. These pop gems were produced by Jeff McDonald of REDD KROSS fame, and each one includes a music video. (SYMPATHY)

BIRDSAW
"Power On Control"
HEMLINE 6301-2 CD $7.75
Seven new, powerful, melodic songs with a heaviness that might remind one of SIOUXSIE AND THE BANSHEES or PENETRATION, from this amazing quartet that puts together elements of alternative rock, space rock and goth punk. Even more amazing, this was recorded live! (HEMLINE)

CENTIMETERS, THE
"I'm Not Exercising Enough"
BZANG 0007-2 CD $7.15
Four songs from this well-known Los Angeles indie-art-pop combo, this is whimsical, fresh-sounding stuff with an experimental edge and real melodies, from expert musicians who really know their way around their instruments. (BZANG)

CHUBBIES, THE
"New Wave Boyfriends"
SFTRI 692-2 CD $10.20
Pure powerpop is the rule on these 9 songs. "New Wave Boyfriends" is like opening up a yearbook from the '80s: the "new wave" guy, the "goth," the "punker," the "stoners," they're all here, and Jeannette names names, with each song title being some dude from her past. She seems so totally not over it. (SYMPATHY)

CONSTANTINES, THE
"The Modern Sinner Nervous Man"
S 020-2 CD EP $6.10
Three songs from this blistering Toronto band, now with new organist Evan Gordon. Rocket-fueled FUGAZI meets Bruce Springsteen, saving rock and roll without changing what you love about it, or so claims the slightly excessive label hype. (SUICIDE SQUEEZE)

DENALI
"Denali"
JT 1073-1 LP $8.85
JT 1073-2 CD $10.20
The name is taken from the Athapasoan word for Alaska's Mt. McKinley, the highest peak in N. America, and the meaning is obvious upon listening to DENALI: cold, remotely desolate, permanent. When Maura Davis approached her older brother, ENGINE DOWN singer/guitarist Keeley Davis, about fleshing out some songs, he agreed. The siblings then enlisted Jonathan Fuller of ENGINE DOWN and SLEEPYTIME on drums, and Cam DiNunzio of LAZYCAIN and FOUR WALLS FALLING. Together, this Richmond VA band crafts beautifully dark lullabies. Produced by Mark Linkous and Allen Weatherhead of SPARKLEHORSE. (JADE TREE)

EE
"Tiny Spot"
AM 082-2 CD5 $6.10
Featuring Soo Young Park from SEAM on guitar and keyboards, with Tobin Mori of KOREA GIRL on guitar and lead vocals, this San Francisco duo is a bit more rocking than SEAM, but still has that indie sound. (ASIAN MAN)

GIRLS AGAINST BOYS
"You Can't Fight What You Can't See"
JT 1074-1 LP $8.85
JT 1074-2 CD $10.20
After parting ways with Geffen, GIRLS AGAINST BOYS have returned to an indie for this, their 7th album. Their stripped down rock sound has not changed; it's as abrasive, bare, and strangely compelling as the band has ever been. (JADE TREE)

JUSTIN SANE
"Life, Love and the Pursuit of Justice"
AF 0018-2 CD $10.20
ANTI-FLAG's front man enters the battle for title of the next Billy Bragg or Elliot Smith, with this 12 song CD. "Urban Folk", they say, with Sane's voice backed only by a semi-distorted guitar. Lyrically, one can expect the usual line of politically motivated songs, but the topics also delve into areas like love, boxing, growing up, and cross-country road trips. Creative and interesting enough to appeal to indie fans, but ironic and cynical enough to please the most crass punk rockers. (A-F)

KEPLER
"Missionless Days"
TMU 088-2 CD $10.20
Delicate, country tinged compositions with masterfully minimal strokes are the trademark of this Ottawa band. With a "less is more" philosophy that enables the band to create wonderfully sparse, lilting songs, one could liken their sound to slo-core bands such as CODEINE and LOW, with a touch of modern alt-country ala SON VOLT. (TROUBLEMAN)

LE TIGRE
"Remixes"
MRLR 24-2 CD $7.85
The CD version of the 12" released in February, this is a DJ-oriented collection of dance remixes for those with radical politics. Remixers include Reid Speed (NYC two step/speed garage/drum and bass DJ), THE DFA (international punk step production team), SWIM WITH THE DOLPHINS (Johanna of LE TIGRE's techno project), and DJ Ham And Cheese On Rye, best known for the "Hot Topic" remix. (MR. LADY)

LOVE LIFE
"Love Life"
31G 23-7 7" $6.40
A heart shaped 7", the follow up songs to their "The Rose He Lied By" debut album. LOVE LIFE features ex-members of UNIVERSAL ORDER OF ARMAGEDDON, THE GREAT UNRAVELING, and JAKS. (THREE ONE G)

MILKY WIMPSHAKE
"Lovers, Not Fighters"
TMU 075-1 LP $8.85
The other band of Pete from RED MONKEY. Taking cues from the BUZZCOCKS and political folk luminaries such as BILLY BRAGG and PHIL OCHS, these songs are a call to arms, but are also super catchy, with Pete's raspy yet melodic voice bringing to mind David Gedge of THE WEDDING PRESENT. (TROUBLEMAN)

ONELINEDRAWING
"Visitor"
JT 1076-1 LP $8.85
JT 1076-2 CD $10.20
Solo project of Jonah Matranga, singer/songwriter of NEW END ORIGINAL and FAR. This album is like a window into a very private form of music making going on in Jonah's bedroom, and one is able to witness a personalized performance made from voice, guitar, bass, feedback, and found sounds. (JADE TREE)

RUTABEGA, THE
"Cobus Green"
JFR 062-2 CD $9.65
South Bend, Indiana indie-rock in the lo-fi bedroom tradition of ELLIOT SMITH, BRIGHT EYES, and THE FLAMING LIPS. College rock from a college town, featuring Josh Hensley's plaintive voice and evocative lyrics. (JOHANN'S FACE)

SELBY TIGERS, THE
"Tell It to the Judge"
ZZZ 13-7 7" $4.45
The first ever non-Hopeless release for this band. Total press darlings, this Minneapolis/St. Paul new wave/pop band should be right up the alley of any Dirtnap fan. (DIRTNAP)

SEMIAUTOMATIC
"Remixed by Concentrick"
GSL 53-7 7" $4.65
This Brooklyn duo features Rop of THE PEECHEES, and their sound is a little bit LE TIGRE, a little bit APHEX TWIN, and a little bit rock'n'roll. The first of the 3 tracks on this 7" is "Seven o' Clock and the Seven Stops," remixed here by Tim Green of THE FUCKING CHAMPS and NATION OF ULYSSES. Sleeve design by Rachel from THE NEED. (GOLD STANDARD LABORATORIES)

SONGS FOR EMMA
"Red Lies, Black Rhymes"
SKIP 95-2 CD $10.50
The 9 to 5 worker's JAM, WHO, or STIFF LITTLE FINGERS has gotten more raw, and more angry with age. Take leftist "better red than dead" thinking, razor shaved vocal chord singing, and music that's hardcore but tuneful, let Kevin Army produce it, and you have SONGS FOR EMMA. (BROKEN)

SUNDAY'S BEST
"The Californian"
PRC 050-2 CD $10.20
The sophomore record by this Los Angeles band shows the group reinventing itself, partially replacing the dual guitar noodling and screaming vocals with acoustic guitar, Fender Rhodes organ, and a rock guitar onslaught with soaring, hook embedded choruses, balanced out with rolling downbeat rhythms, melodically hovering bass lines, and hushed vocals. (POLYVINYL)

TEENAGE FANCLUB & JAD FAIR
"Always in My Heart"
VIRUS 278-7 7" $4.00
Two exclusive tracks taken from the same Riverside Recording Studio sessions as the "Words of Wisdom and Hope" LP. Combining these forces together produces pop so sweet that you'll have to be making a dentist appointment soon, but wonderfully strange enough that half the reason will be to get on the gas. Jad Fair artwork, of course. (ALTERNATIVE TENTACLES)

TRISTEZA
"Tristeza"
GRAVITY 41-1 12" EP $6.90
GRAVITY 41-2 CD $6.55
This San Diego group has broken in Gravity's new studio, and mixed the results with Pall Jenkins of BLACK HEART PROCESSION and 3 MILE PILOT fame. Six long instrumental songs of drums, bass, twin guitars, keys and the occasional horns, all heavily layered together into a psychedelic, spacey mixture with tight rhythms, are featured. Though unmistakably TRISTEZA, these songs are harsher than the group's usually softer sounds. (GRAVITY)

VARIOUS ARTISTS

31G 20-1 LP $9.20

(THREE ONE G)

WALKMEN, THE
"The Blizzard of 1996"
TMU 089-1 LP $9.15
Comprised of ex-members of JONATHAN FIRE EATER and THE RECOYS, this NYC group can be compared to CRIME AND THE CITY SOLUTION, BRIAN ENO, BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN, early U2, THE SMITHS, THE CURE, and JOY DIVISION during the era when they became NEW ORDER. As part of a WALKMEN EP double series, this LP is limited to 750 copies, and features hand screened covers by Neil Burke. (TROUBLEMAN)

AVANT, NEW MUSIC

ALEX DE GRASSI & G.E. STINSON
"Shortwave Postcard"
AU 006-2 CD $13.00
Well known California guitarist De Grassi, who records for Wyndham Hill, and abstract-experimental, post-jazz guitarist Stinson pull off a beautiful merging of electric and acoustic improvisation that will appeal to fans of great guitar improv artists like John Fahey or Fred Frith. Italian import. (AUDITORIUM)

ELLIOTT SHARP, JOEY BARON & ROBERTO ZORZI
"Beyond"
AU 004-2 CD $13.00
Recorded in Sharp's New York studio in 2000, this trio performs exceptionally inventive avant-garde improvised music using electronics and loops, electric and acoustic instruments. Two of Downtown NYC's finest, composer and multi-instrumentalist Sharp and Baron, John Zorn's favorite drummer, join acclaimed Italian guitarist Roberto Zorzi on these 10 tracks. Italian import. (AUDITORIUM)

GAETANO LIGUORI
"Contact"
AU 0052-2 2xCD $16.60
Two versions, separated by 15 years, of an electro-acoustic composition by this acclaimed Italian composer inspired by Karlheinz Stockhausen's "Kontakta." The 1986 version is performed by Gaetano Liguori (piano), Roberto Manes (violin), Davide Zaccaria (cello), Enzo Lo Greco (contrabass), and Pasquale Liguori (drums); the 2001 version features Paul Rutherford (trombone), Tony Rusconi (percussion), Davide Tedesco (contrabass), Davide Santi (violin), and Gaetano Liguori (pianoforte). The variation between the two is astounding. Italian import. (AUDITORIUM)

HENRY FLYNT
"Raga Electric"
LOCUST 6-P LP pic disc $32.00
LOCUST 6-2 CD $11.30
The avant composer's most adventurous, audacious, outsider recordings from 1963 to 1971, including a Hindustani version of the Marines hymn, jarringly spastic free vocal attacks, a twisted, howling fake raga with staccato untuned guitar and bleating screams, an a 13-minute free squelch and squeal exploration of every hairy sound he could get out of a saxophone. (LOCUST)

PROVISIONAL RIVIERA
"Autumn Leaves"
TRANSPARENCY 0056-2 CD $10.70
Cello and synth musique concrete avant-noir-ness from SOLID EYE co founder William Leavitt. There's 10 pieces here, all very abstract and experimental, and largely on the quiet side. (TRANSPARENCY)

BLUES

BLACK KEYS, THE
"The Big Come Up"
ALIVE 0044-2 CD $11.00
An amazing trio, combining stripped down rock'n'roll with plenty of Memphis grit, Motor City stomp, and Mississippi hollers led by guitarist/singer Dan Auerbach, who got his chops in numerous trips to Greenville MS, playing blues guitar romps in the juke joints with James "T Model" Ford and sleeping on the floor of his trailer home. (ALIVE)

BLUES RE-ISSUES

JOHN HAMMOND
"Big City Blues"
UV 044-2 CD $13.00
His beautiful second album, out in 1964 on Vanguard, is one of the first electric white blues recordings and one of the very first that could be said to be blues-rock. Hammond and his band cover a variety of Chess Records classics and electrify some older tunes. With 7 bonus tracks and the original artwork. Italian import. (UNIVERSE)

JOHN LEE HOOKER
"Burnin'"
GET 7502-1 LP $12.55
The genuine king of the endless boogie, Hooker originally released this classic in 1962 on the Vee-Jay label. With his signature tune "Boom Boom" (an infectious song that cracked the pop airwaves) and his penchant for droning, hypnotic one-chord grooves at once both ultra-primitive and timeless, these 11 tracks contributed greatly to the making of a genuine blues superstar. Original artwork, 180 gram vinyl, Italian import. (GET BACK)

LIGHTNIN' HOPKINS

ELECTRONIC, EXPERIMENTAL

BOB OSTERTAG
"Say No More, Volumes 1 & 2"
SEELAND 521-2 2xCD $12.60
Musicians Joey Baron (drums), Mark Dresser (bass), Gerry Hemingway (drums), and Phil Minton (voice) were sent by Ostertag (sampler) separately into studios with no instructions except to improvise. Using a computer, Ostertag then exploded the solos into fragments, and created a virtual "band" from the pieces. The musicians were then challenged to go back and re-learn their parts as Ostertag had put them together. Disk one features the piece from the original computer reconstruction, while the 2nd disk is the ensemble playing the composition live. Already considered to be an avant-garde masterpiece. The CDs come in a beautifully hand silk screened steel box with color inserts. (SEELAND)

CRACK WE ARE ROCK / WOLF EYES
"Split LP"
FCUTE 001-1 LP $7.25
Two self-described "messed-up" groups of electronic experimenters split this LP. CRACK WE ARE ROCK turns in dark, rhythmic, heavy and minimal tunes with chanted vocals, much like some of the early industrial bands of the late '70s or early '80s. WOLF EYES, with ex-members of GALEN, COUCH, VIOLENT RAMP and UNIVERSAL INDIANS, is much more abstract electronics, with noise instead of tone and only intermittent rhythms, in one long track called "Day of Hell." (FCUTE)

HAIR POLICE
"Blow Out Your Blood"
FF 0172-2 CD $7.45
Noise boys from Kentucky with a take on harsh chaos in the fine tradition of HARRY PUSSY, MELT BANANA, or COUCH. Totally spazz vocals mostly buried under torture chamber electronics or wildman guitar/drums freakout, with some sort of psychic calm at the center of the maelstrom. (FREEDOM FROM)

REYNOLS / NO REYNOLS
"Reynols / No Reynols"
FF 38946-2 2xCD $12.00
This double CD package has one disc by the famous Argentine experimental band REYNOLS, and another by their offshoot group NO REYNOLS. A bit like AMM with chanted/sung vocals, REYNOLS is disciplined, but with a strong tendency to explore the sounds of instruments ranging from acoustic guitar to harsh electronics. NO REYNOLS, while similar, is slimmed down and more primal, with a different vocalist and no keyboards. (FREEDOM FROM)

SIGHTINGS
"Sightings"
FF 0115-7 7" $4.35
Atomic blender-like guitar/bass/drums blitz-attack, songs blurred into electric chainsaw razor-drill vibrato/live animal skinning, microphoned and amplified 10,000 times... you get the picture. Their debut recording. (FREEDOM FROM)

VIBRACATHEDRAL ORCHESTRA, THE
"String Band/Drum Troupe"
FF 0071-7 7" $4.35
The string and percussion sections of the acclaimed free sound group each step out on their own with a side each of this 7". Queasy scanty shanty string swing on one side, and disorienting bell drum shaker rumble on the other. Limited pressing of 300. (FREEDOM FROM)

PATRICK MATA
"Hydrocarbons from a Meteorite (Green)"
TRANSPARENCY 0051-2 CD $10.70
The first solo CD from the former leader of pioneering Los Angeles '80s industrial-goth outfit KOMMUNITY FK (and more recently SATIVA LUV BOX), this pretty much runs the gamut of his interests, from ethno-ambience to hard industrial rock to goth ballad to rhythmic chill-out to trance to trip hop and more. The 14-page booklet features several of his rather bizarre collages in full color. (TRANSPARENCY)

STEVE THOMSEN
"Folding Pineapple"
TRANSPARENCY 0026-2 CD $10.70
A solo from one of the founding members of the legendary late-'70s Los Angeles experimental band MONITOR, more recently involved in SOLID EYE. Highly orchestrated, complex and layered melodic instrumentals that could only be described as cinematic, the 13 selections here are just begging to be movie soundtracks. (TRANSPARENCY)

STEVE THOMSEN
"Retrospective"
TRANSPARENCY 0005-2 CD $10.70
A collection of 24 soundtrack-like synthesizer compositions recorded at home by the former member of MONITOR and current member of SOLID EYE, with guest vocals on 5 tracks by Marilyn Defrange. (TRANSPARENCY)

EMO

CASKET LOTTERY, THE
"Survival is for Cowards"
SN 031-1 LP $10.00
SN 031-2 CD $10.20
Flailing dynamics are their trademark, with serene passages and sonorous moments of contemplation becoming aggressive eruptions. The dual vocals of Ellis and Stacy Hilt show great range, as the band explores main grooves laden with wavering guitar leads, then launches into exquisite arrangements. Indie, emo, math rock? This eschews defined categories. Recorded and produced by Ed Rose, knob twirler behind THE GET UP KIDS, COALESCE, REGGIE AND THE FULL EFFECT, and THE ANNIVERSARY. (SECOND NATURE)

FRICTION
"Hours of Operation"
PRC 049-2 2xCD $12.00
Made up of Bob Nanna from BRAID and HEY MERCEDES on drums and vocals, Scott Broadhurst on bass, and Andy Knudsen on guitar, FRICTION was a very influential band on the early '90s Chicago indie/emo/punk scene, also spawning the legendary CAP 'N' JAZZ. Polyvinyl has come up with 32 songs for this retrospective; every song the band ever recorded, starting with the long out of print "Blurred in Six" LP, then throwing in all the 7" and comp tracks, and finishing off with nearly a dozen tracks that were completed for a never released 2nd album. The release also includes a multitude of pictures, all of the lyrics, and complete liner notes. (POLYVINYL)

HOT WATER MUSIC / THE CASKET LOTTERY
"Colors, Words, and Dreams"
SN 036-7 7" $4.00
A great tribute to GOVERNMENT ISSUE! THE CASKET LOTTERY begins with their take of GI's "For Ever," offering an uptempo, aggressive interpretation, complete with frayed guitar leads, cool back-up vocals, and a melodic yet rough lead vocal. On the flip, HOT WATER MUSIC gets a bit dirtier and direct, tackling "Jaded Eyes." Though on the edge and slightly sloppy, their playing is competent, as the simple yet effective chorus plays to their strengths well. (SECOND NATURE)

PEDRO THE LION
"Control"
JT 1072-1 LP $8.85
JT 1072-2 CD $10.20
On his 3rd full length, Pedro (aka: David Bazan) has recruited SELDOM's Casey Foubert, and the result is a darker, fuller, heavier sound for this Seattle entity. "Control" the album is a raw, loose story of a hyper modern marriage gone wrong. Wrapped inside the songs arrangements, fans will find the trademark lyrical wrangling being pushed further to the side of heartache, cheating and misery than ever before. In the end the wife stabs the husband, leaving the listener with another of Bazan's efforts to set up expectations of peace and harmony, only to show them failing wholeheartedly. (JADE TREE)

VARIOUS ARTISTS

(JADE TREE)

EXPERIMENTAL ROCK

APE HAS KILLED APE
"Mattricide"
TCCD 004-2 CD $10.70
Lo-fi, experimental rock with a huge collection of instruments and participants, this still has a stripped-down, minimal feel. Ample use of theramin, acoustic guitar and a huge lot of percussion instruments of every type give it a unique sound that's noisy but relaxed, without being overbearing. (TRUE CLASSICAL)

STARFUCKERS
"(Infinitive Sessions)"
DBK 102-2 CD $11.30
The 5th album from Italian experimental concrete-rock collective, combining the no-wave of THE CONTORTIONS with a deconstructed take on the staggered soul rhythms of FRED WESLEY AND THE J.B.s, the gusto of THE STOOGES, the grinding prickly punk of BIG FLAME and the enigmatic cycles of industrial repetition of '80s art rockers THIS HEAT. It's a fundamentally enigmatic album, so prepare yourself for a peculiar ride through the exoskeleton of musical form into a disorienting miasma of sound dislocation. (DBK WORKS)

Long out of print, here's the record that made the the garage punk community stand up and say, "What the fuck's amatta with these hillbillies?" That maniac from such primo trash-o-phonic groups as THE ROYAL PENDLETONS, THE PERSUADERS, and BAD TIMES debuts his first full solo (literally) album with this raving, drooling, bayou-bred slab of pure swamp-ola dementia and back alley depravity. Louie plays guitar, bass drum, harmonica, kazoo, shakers, coffee can and cowbell, screams, snorts like a pig, or barks like a dog, all at the same time, live! (EXTRA BALL)

MONKS, THE
"Let's Start a Beat"
MR 207-1 LP $12.55
MR 207-2 CD $11.90
Recorded live at NYC's Cavestomp Festival in 1999, this reunion concert by one of the strangest and noisiest of the '60s garage punk bands is a rediscovery of their furious, minimalistic sound that anticipated the blunt, harsh commentary of '70s punk. Formed by American GIs stationed in Germany in 1966, they performed in monks' robes with shaved heads; the weirdness quotient was heightened by electric banjo, berserk organ runs, and occasional bursts of feedback guitar. With extensive liner notes, gatefold sleeve, and a video clip on the CD. Spanish import. (MUNSTER)

MOO-RAT FINGERS, THE
"Actung Duschbag"

OOS 001-2 CD $7.75
A compilation of all the tracks from the "Garbage Can" 7" and "Attack!" 12", both now officially out of print, with bonus material including a hidden, insane, unreleased song! Taking elements of PERE UBU, ELECTRIC EELS, hardcore punk rock, and mangled, twisted garage, many consider them to be the best band on the planet. Pulverizing drums, unbridled bass lines, chaotic, skilled guitar, distorted Farfisa, and an absolutely insane singer crash on tape like the rusted out cars of their Motor City hometown, creating an echoing sound of primitive futurism. (ON/ON SWITCH)

"Iron Man"
GET 2009-1 LP $12.55
These classic recordings, from a true original with his own distinctive alto, flute and bass clarinet styles, are some of the most brilliant work of the early '60s avant-garde, clearly anticipating the detailed, abstract sound paintings of Dolphy's masterwork "Out to Lunch." These tracks are weighted toward Dolphy originals like "Iron Man," "Burning Spear," and the shorter "Mandrake," but all have outside themes, full of Dolphy's trademark wide interval leaps and playful sense of dissonance. Also features vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, bassist Richard Davis, trumpeter Woody Shaw, flutist Prince Lasha, altoist Sonny Simmons and soprano sax player Clifford Jordan. Original artwork, 180 gram vinyl, Italian import. (GET BACK)

PSYCH RE-ISSUES

FREEDOM
"Freedom at Last"
GET 325-1 LP $13.70
This PROCOL HARUM spinoff was formed by their original guitarist and drummer (Ray Royer and Bobby Harrison), and the result is a bluesy hard rock trio similar to PROCOL HARUM or early TRAFFIC: some good slices of late British psychedelia with the prominent use of organ, piano and heavy guitar. Originally released in 1969 as #25 in the BYG Actuel series. Original artwork, gatefold sleeve, 180 gram vinyl, Italian import. (GET BACK)

HAPSHASH & THE COLOURED COAT
"Featuring the Human Host and the Heavy Metal Kids"
AK 204-1 LP $17.25
AK 204-2 CD $13.00
Electric mayhem and freeform freakout from this British psych band's classic first album, originally out in 1968 on the Minit label. Formed by art students/designers Michael English and Nigel Weymouth, whose striking graphics were seen on many bright and trippy posters for psychedelic clubs like The UFO and Middle Earth in London, along with DJ and manager Guy Stevens, they have been compared to New York's THE GODZ. THE HEAVY METAL KIDS, the alter ego of the proto-SPOOKY TOOTH group ART (comprised of Mike Harrison, Greg Ridley, Mike Kellie and Luther Grosvenor) also appears here, but who was THE HUMAN HOST? The first 500 copies of this re-issue are on red vinyl. Original artwork, 180 gram vinyl, Italian import. (AKARMA)

JERICHO JONES
"Junkies, Monkeys and Donkeys"
AK 202-1 2xLP $25.60
AK 202-2 CD $13.00
This Israeli group began as THE CHURCHILLS, moved to England, changed their name to JERICHO JONES, then simply JERICHO. They released this one obscure but classic psychedelic-meets-hard-rock album in 1971 on A&M. This re-issue features 5 previously unreleased bonus tracks. Gatefold sleeve, original artwork, 180 gram vinyl, Italian import. (AKARMA)

MU
"MU"
AK 209-1 LP $17.25
A gem of the late hippie era, this 1971 release on RTV combines the fractured blues-based tangents of BEEFHEART with the loose flow and stoned lyricism of bands like the late '60s GRATEFUL DEAD. This southern California band included early-'60s surf/garage guitarist Merrell Fankhauser, who delivers some tasty, laid-back guitar work, and Jeff Cotton, who later played with BEEFHEART. On of the more unclassifiable recordings of the time, with mystical, well-structured songs. With 4 bonus tracks and gatefold sleeve. Original artwork, 180 gram vinyl, Italian import. (AKARMA)

RUST
"Come with Me"
AK 208-1 LP $17.25
AK 208-2 CD $13.00
Originally released in 1969 on the independent German label Hör Zu, this minor masterpiece of British psychedelic pop (sometimes compared to THE DEVIANTS) is full of gorgeous keyboard sounds, weird and sparse arrangements, treated piano, general garage mayhem, fuzzed-up guitar, distorted vocals and sound effects. Original artwork, 180 gram vinyl, Italian import. (AKARMA)

T. SWIFT & THE ELECTRIC BAG
"Are You Experienced?"
GFC 425-1 LP $17.25
This obscure, mysterious classic was originally released in 1968 on the tiny Custom label. Sometimes compared to ANIMATED EGG or UNDERGROUND, this American psych band's only release features a unique, fuzzed-out interpretation of the JIMI HENDRIX tune, and a vocal and an instrumental side. Original artwork, 180 gram vinyl, Italian import. (GEAR FAB)

PUNK

AMOEBA (RAFT BOY)
"Bad Fuggum from the Mysterium"
SV 35-2 CD $8.35
14 songs (4 studio, 10 live) by this odd band, all recorded in 1996, featuring John Morton of THE ELECTRIC EELS and Paul Marotta of THE STYRENES. The live set includes PAGANS and ELECTRIC EELS classics. Great sound quality on the live stuff (Recorded for WFMU), and proof positive that weirdos go on to become old weirdos. (SMOG VEIL)

CADAVERS, THE
"Nevermind the Bodies, Here's the Cadavers"
NOMA 1-7 7" $4.35
Previously unreleased studio recordings by the predecessor band to THE BODIES, who should need no introduction. Recorded in 1993, this is great, hard-charging and very well played street punk with dual male/female vocals. 3 songs. (NOMA BEACH)

CRIMSON SWEET
"So Electric"
SGZ 004-7 7" $4.00
Rock and roll gives way to post-punk smatterings, with distinct qualities of '80s ROIR type Lower East Side trash rock, on this magical 2 song release. Rooster Booster's vocals are nothing short of possessed, as she takes potentially sweet melodies and tears them to pieces. The strong rhythm section of Rob Kongress and Rich Lathers creates a solid, trashy bottom, as Rooster takes phaser laced, distorted Flying V guitar sounds and tears those apart, too. This stuff is challenging, melodic, and original punk rock that's very arty, but still very driving. Blue vinyl pressing. (SLOW GOLD ZEBRA)

GLASS CANDY & THE SHATTERED THEATRE / SUBTONIX
"Split EP"
TMU 041-7 7" $4.35
Portland's GLASS CANDY stir things up with their patented brand of "death disco." On the flip, SF's horror prom queens THE SUBTONIX bring their female SCREAMERS-with-baritone-sax-neo-wave to the table. These are exclusive cuts that will not be on either of the upcoming albums. (TROUBLEMAN)

"New Stories for Men"
P 065-2 CD $10.20
Daniel Rey, longtime RAMONES crony and producer of Joey's posthumous solo record, leads this NYC band which is being compared to "Kiss Me Deadly"-era GENERATION X, THE REPLACEMENTS, THE JAM, and THE PLIMSOULS with some 1975 NYC rock and roll thrown in. Er, does this mean they wear high heels? Oh yeah, also features members of BONGWATER and KING MISSILE. Yikes! (SCOOCH POOCH)

NEON KING KONG
"Mix Up the Mix"
GSL 55-7 7" $4.35
Two songs here from Hot Rod Todd of LE SHOK's new L.A. based outfit. The group also features Buddy and Mike of TEENAGE KNOCKOUTS/TEENAGE HEARTHROBS and LESBIAN MAKERS on guitar and bass, and Jeremy of THE COUNT on drums. Though one can make comparisons to LE SHOK, the level of musicianship is a notch above. Darrel Licht of LE SHOK adds keys to side one, and the sleeve is designed by LE SHOK guitarist Asshole Andrew. (GOLD STANDARD LABORATORIES)

PUNK RE-ISSUES

FEEDERZ, THE
"Teachers in Space"
SKIP 97-2 CD $10.80
A CD reissue of this punk classic with cover art that depicted the space shuttle Challenger explosion, prompting John Waters to admit that even he found it "shocking." Savage drums and gut wrenching guitar work collide with lyrics about the joys of sabotage, theft, vandalism, looting, refusal, and revolt. Bonus multimedia footage on the CD includes the entire 40 minute, June 1987 Gilman Street set where Frank Discussion played with a dead cat and dead dog hung around his neck and live crickets glued to his head. (BROKEN)

SOUNDTRACK RE-ISSUES

ENNIO MORRICONE
"Danger Diabolik"

The rarest, missing psychedelic MORRICONE soundtrack in a deluxe full color digipak release! One of the trashiest, most freaked out films he ever scored, this has fuzz guitars, sitars and Bacchanalian rock music mixing freely with his usual genius for emotive melodies and female vocal writing. High fidelity transfer of the music, along with some really goofy dialog from the film. (SYCODELIC)

"Wigwam, Cowboys, Roter Kreis"
ASM 009-2 CD $13.00

SV 26-2 CD $8.35
Speedriff-bratcore from the eastern suburbs of Cleveland circa 1981-87. Makes you almost want to be from the eastern suburbs of Cleveland (we said almost). One could compare them to a Midwestern ANGRY SAMOANS or early QUEERS. Fast, fast, fast, and catchy, catchy, catchy, with an ability to make songs about nuclear war funny. ROKY ERICKSON & THE ALIENS
"The Evil One (Plus One)"
SFTRI 685-2 2xCD $13.15
The first, and many would argue the best album by the former 13th Floor Elevators singer, originally released in 1980 by CBS in Europe. This reissue also includes the 5 extra songs that appeared on the 415 Records version, released in 1981. The 2nd disc features 10 additional tracks from the "French Sponge" EP and earlier "Evil One" demos, plus excerpts from a legendary radio interview with Roky, the guy who supposedly receives 3 sacks of self-requested junk mail a day. We feel that Roky and Ozzy are perfect examples of why it's cool to take acid every day for extended periods of time. (SYMPATHY)

BOOKS

DENNIS, LAWRENCE
"Operational Thinking For Survival"
MYLES 003 book $6.90
Uniquely, Dennis repeatedly defines his terms, (thereby avoiding the usual semantics), making war-reliant economics and political dynamics easy to understand, and develops a starting point from which to determine how, not what, to think about the challenges of the our age, although some of his assumptions can be pretty reactionary. Previously a U.S. diplomat who became disgusted with U.S. foreign policy, and an international banker baffled by huge, stupid loans being approved and then defaulted on, as well as a leading non-pacifist opponent of US entry into World War II. Learn the views that led the Roosevelt regime to muzzle Dennis in its infamous 1944 sedition trial. Somewhat dated, or is it? Written in 1969. 252 pages, hardcover. (RALPH MYLES PUBLISHING)

LIGGIO, LEONARD P. AND MARTIN, JAMES J., EDS.
"Watershed of Empire: Essays on New Deal Foreign Policy"
MYLES 020 book $5.50
A collection of penetrating re-examinations of various aspects of the key foreign policy decisions of the Roosevelt administrations, 1933-45, by seven academic specialists, mostly from some variety of WW2 isolationism. Topics such as the New Deal monetary system, the meddlesome "Good Neighbor Policy" in South America, interventionist diplomacy elsewhere and empire building at home, and the failed isolationist response, with a generous helping of Cold War rhetoric. Written in 1976. 232 pages. (RALPH MYLES PUBLISHING)

MARTIN, JAMES J.
"An American Adventure in Bookburning, In the Style of 1918"
MYLES 024 book $4.55
A succinct yet seemingly complete accounting of the U.S.'s World War I unshelving of her nation's libraries and bookstores, to flush out the spector of "German propaganda" (Berkman's "Prison Memoirs of an Anarchist"?!). Not like some authors' posthumously indignant scandal sheets, this is a humorous survey usually utilizing the then-contemporary sources. Includes a 1954 bibliography "A Beginner's Manual For Apprentice Bookburners." Written in 1989. 137 pages. (BOOKS)

MARTIN, JAMES J. ED.
