A document of one of the great art riots of the 20th century! Recorded live in Milan in 1977, Cage, in a ghostly voice, reads disembodied words and phonemes from Thoreau's diary before an audience of university students. As the 2 hour performance continues, the audience revolts, takes over the stage, the whole thing gets totally surreal, and you get to hear it all. NEW MUSIC, EXPERIMENTAL

CHRISTOF MIGONE
"Crackers"
LOCUST 1-2 CD $11.90
Electronic sound installation artist Migone uses cracking knuckles, knees, wrists, jaws, toes, ankles, backs, necks, elbows and hips as a sound source, then digitally manipulates the recordings into a percolating, popping, polyrhythmic series of compositions, at once amusingly bubbly and oddly trance-inducing. (LOCUST)

Upright bass, guitars and musique concrete style voice collages from the duo of Roger Tellier-Craig of GODSPEED YOU BLACK EMPEROR and FLY PAN AM, and Alxeandre St-Onge of UNDO and SHALABI EFFECT. A drifting, hypnotic epic where continuously unraveling ribbons of sound shape-shift into a sonic surprise of otherworldly cinematic proportions. (LOCUST)

NEGATIVLAND
"These Guys are From England and Who Gives a Shit"
SEELAND 021-2 CD $11.30
10 years ago this September, Bay Area culture jammers NEGATIVLAND found their latest record sued out of existence by the powers that be. Now, ten years later, this has been delivered to Seeland Records in a brown paper wrapper with no explanation. Here is the historical audio archive of apparently illegal acts involving unwilling guys from Ireland (though it says they are from England). A legally impossible compilation of studio and unreleased live radio and concert versions of their most sued work; a definitive collection of their most criminal music. (SEELAND)

"Two and Two"
AMPERE 09-2 CD $11.90

DEMETRIO STRATOS
"Metrodora"
GET 5206-1 LP $12.55
The late, Egyptian-born DEMETRIO STRATOS was one of the most unusual and extreme vocalists ever to record, and this 1976 album, reflecting work he was doing with JOHN CAGE at the time, proves it. Seven compositions free his unbelievably skilled voice of every restraint. Screeches, screams, yodels and other instances of vocal chords stretched to the limit alternate and collide with tones you would swear are instruments, but aren't. Solo voice, overdubbed voices, occasional synthesizer blips contribute to the indescribable strangeness. Original artwork, 180 gram audiophile vinyl, Italian import. (GET BACK)

Another blast of the Northwest past, this album of new wave electro-pop (led by SKY CRIES MARY keyboardist Gordon Raphael) was recorded in 1984, but remained unreleased until 1999. Echos of THOMAS DOLBY and NEW ORDER abound, but in a style all their own. (CHUCKIE BOY)

FAST FORWARD
"Fast Forward"
VMFM 55-2 CD $9.00

MOCKET
"Pro-Forma"
KRS 338-1 LP $8.85
KRS 338-2 CD $11.30
MOCKET is another hot punk rock new wave sensation from Olympia, in the tradition of bands like THE BANGS, THE NEED and LONG HIND LEGS. This is MOCKET's third record. The retro elements of their first two records are gone and they sound very current and millennial, not in an indie rock way, more like no wave, with Rachel from THE NEED's signature choppy rhythms and lots of samples and weird noises buried in those darkly creative catchy pop songs with a twist. They recorded this one themselves at home, and mixed it with John Goodmanson. (KILL ROCK STARS)

NO-WAVE RE-ISSUES

VON LMO
"Future Language"
FM 001-2 CD $10.70
A CD re-release of the New York perennial hipster's original 1981 LP on Strazar Records. Using rough, ripping punk and metal riffs, tons of electronic effects a la ENO, crazed outer-space rants, and plenty more than enough volume, Von tore up the NYC club scene in the late '70s and early '80s with his freakish, often violent show. Here's a bit of a clue to what it was like. (FLEMISH MASTERS)

NOISE, ELECTRONIC, TECHNO

BAZ / EDITH BUNKER'S DEMONIZED VOMIT INSURANCE
"Split LP"
NSBQ 7-1 LP $9.60
Two sides of playful noise and goofing around with tape recorders. Instruments, bits of songs with dadaesque pre-adolescent lyrics, electronics, bashing on stuff, yelling, blowing on microphones, extreme distortion, you name it. A Lincoln NE band that played and recorded from 1971-73, this basement psych outfit was heavily influenced by BEEFHEART and ZAPPA. This LP collects the tracks from their lone 7" plus a bunch of unreleased material, all of it pretty strange. RUNAWAY WEINER DOG
"Here Be Monsters"
RWD 1002-7 7" $3.55
Ten short, jumpy, hyperactive, neurotic rants disguised as songs about stuff like limping falcons, drinking pickle juice, Harriet Tubman, and orange taxi cabs. Toy casios collide headlong with more "regular" instruments played in a very unregular way. May tend to remind you of HALF JAPANESE, but so what. (IMPEDANCE)

SANDRA BELL
"City of Sorrows"
VHF 39-2 CD $10.70
Stark and sultry songs from the queen of New Zealand hazed-out melancholy. Her first release since 1995, after several on the Xpressway, IMD, and Turbulence labels. (VHF)

TMU 042-2 CD $7.85
The debut album from this uniquely chaotic Brooklyn noise/hardcore band that's been described as VOID meets HARRY PUSSY. The vinyl comes with a deluxe full color 16-page giant booklet, and the CD has the same booklet CD-sized. (TROUBLEMAN)

BLACK DICE / ERASE ERRATA
"Split EP"
TMU 080-7 7" $4.00
Brooklyn's BLACK DICE have evolved from a straight hardcore band into a very interesting and brutal noisecore unit reminiscent of HARRY PUSSY, THROBBING GRISTLE, and MERZBOW. Their sound keeps changing and this record finds them at their creative peak using soundbites and tape loops to create an insane and chaotic experience. San Francisco's ERASE ERRATA offer two exclusive tracks not on their upcoming full length. Their sound blends all the best elements of punk, new wave, and disco. Fans of the Rough Trade/99 Records/Y Records sound will not be disappointed. Amazing cover art as well. Pressed in an edition of 1000 copies. (TROUBLEMAN)

DEERHOOF
"Come See the Duck"
BAN 001-7 7" $4.20
Kill Rock Stars' most unpredictable band journeys deep into the collective conscious of rock & roll. Pleasing or painful? Good or Evil? Pop or rock? DEERHOOF is one of those bands that refuse to provide an answer. (BANANO)

DEERHOOF

A duo of Sharon Crenshaw (ex-RED EYE and SUTURE) on guitar, vocals and electronics, and Juliana Bright on drums. Angular guitar, tape loops, impassioned melodic vocals and driving beat. Previous releases on Dischord and Decomposition. (KILL ROCK STARS)

FUEHLER
"Fuehler"
OSTIN 01-2 CD $11.00
This German band might remind you of SKULLFLOWER in some ways, though their overwhelming noise-rock tsunamis are more atmospheric in tone, almost lighter than air. Very nice 16 page booklet with each page illustrating a song with striking imagery. German import. (OSTINATO)

GANG WIZARD / ROSE FOR BOHDAN
"Split EP"
ACME 95-7 7" $4.00
ROSE FOR BOHDAN tweak through 3 twisted tracks, with a shocking cover of a HEAVENS TO BETSY classic. GANG WIZARD play 2 shrill numbers that establish what garage would sound like if it were good. (BLACKBEAN & PLACENTA)

LOS CINCOS / GOGOGOAIRHEART
"Split LP"
SFTRI 580-1 LP $8.25
SFTRI 580-2 CD $9.65
LOS CINCOS focus on their CAN and FAUST influences, fusing them with WIRE-like edgy guitar and haunted dub. GOGOGOAIRHEART only does 2 songs, but one of them is 17 minutes of Krautrockian intrigue. (SYMPATHY)

AZ 04-1 LP $8.70
AZ 04-2 CD $11.30
A re-release of their 1994 debut album, this Japanese freakazoid group takes cues from punk, no wave and rock, fashioning short but sweet speed rush hybrids from their thoroughly unconventional use of guitar, bass, drums and vocals. BS 02-2 CD $10.00

A true period piece of the Chicago noisecore underground! (NO SIDES)

NINJAS
"Ninjas"
ACME 75-7 7" $4.00
Really just one guy (Eric Copeland), THE NINJAS produce noisy guitar racket with a very poppy edge. This is as clangy and lively as their 12", and is a taste of what the upcoming CD will sound like. 2 exclusive tracks! (BLACKBEAN & PLACENTA)

NONE OF YOUR FUCKING BUSINESS
"30 Seconds of..."
OFF 1-7 7" $4.00
7 tracks in an astounding 30 seconds; 30 seconds of noisecore mayhem and innovation of format, playable at any speed. This one sided 7" leaves the listener as satisfied as Frank Zappa did with 2 LPs worth of material on "Freak Out!" What the hell can you really do with 10 minutes of noisecore that you can't do with 30 seconds, anyway? (PERPLEXING)

POLYSICS
"Hey! Bob! My Friend!"
AM 070-P pic LP $8.25
AM 070-2 CD $9.00
Visually, a Japanese equivalent to DEVO, right down to the yellow jumpsuits! Musically, an indescribable mixture of electronic wizardry, mixed with the aggressiveness of fellow countrymen the BOREDOMS, raw guitars, and tons of energy, more like MELT BANANA or the UK's infamous RANCID HELL SPAWN (without the raunchy humor). Funny thing is that this could appease an electronica crowd. The vinyl is a full color picture disc! (ASIAN MAN)

POLKA

POLKACIDE
"Hardcore 2/4"
DOG 005-2 CD $7.75
POLKACIDE is what happens when a bunch of punks, musical oddballs and confirmed barflies gets turned on to trad polka. Outrageous, gut-busting humor, really great, high-energy playing, and attitude all over the place. This ain't your grandma's polka band, kiddo. If anybody cares, this is their 2nd album, released some 13 years after the first. How's that for drunken procrastination? (DOGPATCH)

ATARI STAR, THE
"And Other Smaller, Brighter Worlds"
JFR 061-2 CD $9.65
Swirling, gentle pop songs coupled with bittersweet lyrics, this expands even further upon the melodic pop textures of their 2001 debut. This is straight forward pop, so do not expect a bunch of indie noise or noodling. You can expect touching, almost quirky at times pop, as if WEEZER were a bit softer, and alot cooler. The arrangements are also accented by perfectly placed piano, organ, and synth; so perfectly it's hard to notice at times, while at other times, bright piano chords or spooky synths are featured. Recorded by Chicago engineer Jeremy Lemos, whose other credits include STEREOLAB, JOAN OF ARC, SMOG, and JIM O'ROURKE. (JOHANN'S FACE)

SFTRI 569-1 LP $8.25
SFTRI 569-2 CD $9.65
From Japan comes a mix of RAMONES and the female pop singers like ANNETTE and JACKIE DE SHANNON of the early '60s. The singer has a pretty dizzy musical sensibility with a unique high-pitched delivery that works in perfect contrast to her band's no-frills '77 style buzzsaw punk assault. There is nothing earth-shattering here. Instead, they boldly cover familiar territory, but they've added their own fascinating twist. (SYMPATHY FOR THE RECORD INDUSTRY)

PROGRESSIVE HARDCORE

ORTHRELM
"Asristir Vieldriox"
TMU 093-1 LP $8.55
TMU 093-2 CD $9.00
This duo consists of Mick Barr (CROM-TECH) on guitar and vocals, and Josh Blair (ABCS) on drums. Musically, this is even more intricate than CROM TECH, and takes more of a "metal" approach, with it's very intense, fast, free jazz inspired, sometimes incomprehensible, prog-hardcore, and comes as a 99-song one-sided, etched 12", or 99 song CD! No shit. The etching was done at the mastering lab by Mick himself. A truly original record by a truly original band. (TROUBLEMAN)

PIXELTAN
"Pixeltan"
TMU 079-1 12" $8.55
TMU 079-2 CD $9.00
This Brooklyn, NY group began in 1999, with some referring to their sound as "disco punk." Others simply refer to similar bands, such as LIQUID LIQUID, ESG, PIL, MEDIUM MEDIUM, or any other band with 3 letters or two words repeated in their name. This is percussion oriented, with Hirsham from BLACK DICE pulverizing the drums with his erratic and machine-like style. The guitar is played by a nameless NYC graffiti artist, who creates a unique sound through the use of effects. The female vocals are used like an instrument, with yelps, screeches and wails, bringing to mind PATTY WATERS. All of this with a dance beat in the background! Colored vinyl, with silkscreened covers by Neil Burke. (TROUBLEMAN)

"Live Concerts"
AK 1030-2 3xCD $35.50

Encompassing rock, jazz, folk, free improvisation, classical influences and progressive, they approached rock music with a political rigor that was unmatched by any other popular group of the time. The 1st disc is from a Milan concert, with guests Steve Lacy and Paul Lytton. Filled with the dense sound of unbelievable high virtuosity and inspired energy, it includes the previously unreleased "Improvisation" which sees Lytton and Lacy really stretch out into some abstract atmospheres. Two 1976 concerts from Paris (2nd disc) and Lisbon (3rd disc) make up the rest of the collection which feature some excellent performances and some charming French asides from Demetrio Stratos. AK 184-1 LP $17.25

An excellent album of tuneful interplanetary madness from this British group recorded in 1969 under goofy pseudonyms, but in fact these guys were some of the biggest names in UK progressive rock: Steve Hillage (who went on to play in GONG) and Dave Stewart, Clive Brooks and Mont Campbell (who formed EGG). Originally out on Evolution, this heavy, spacey, keyboard driven album is often compared to PINK FLOYD's "Saucer Full of Secrets," and their "Garden of Earthly Delights" is an influential classic of early UK progressive psychedelia.
